Hindalco is a leading copper manufacturer in India. The company has an integrated facility at Dahej in Gujarat, which holds the unique distinction of being the largest copper smelter at a single location in the world.
Hindalco produces copper cathodes and continuous cast copper rods. The copper cathodes are available under the brand names - Birla Copper and Birla Copper II. Birla Copper cathodes with 99.99 per cent copper purity levels are square shaped and are produced using the Mount ISA electro-refining process. The continuous cast copper rods have an excellent surface finish, and are suitable for processing to enamelled, coated and plated wires. The rods are available in diameters of 8, 11, 12.5, 16 and 19 mm.
Birla Copper also produces precious metals, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, di-ammonium phospate and other phosphoric fertilisers and phospho gypsum.
Gold and silver possess an affinity to copper ore and are found in certain quantities in the copper concentrate supplies. Hindalco pays for the gold and silver content based on the prevailing international bullion market prices and other factors. The precious metals are then extracted at the refinery following copper refining, to extract 99.9 per cent pure gold, silver and selenium. The residue contains traces of platinum and palladium, which is sold as platinum group metal mix, commonly known as PGM.
