Farmers in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh are leading a better life, with the support of Hindalco’s Mahan aluminium plant. The Plant has constructed 21 check-dams in the area, which have benefitted thousands of households. Groundwater levels have risen and there is water round the year. The check-dams have also helped improve irrigation in about 500 acres of land.
More land is being used today for agriculture, and the availability of water has helped the farmers to go in for multi-cropping; from wheat they have started growing vegetables and many have even started pisciculture or fish farming. Already household incomes are up by about 75 per cent and local women no longer have to walk long distances to collect water.
Animal husbandry is another focus area in the region. As part of the initiative, farmers have been encouraged to form cooperatives and take up rearing of milch cows. In addition to financial support, farmers are encouraged to adopt scientific practices to run their dairy farms. Over 15 dairy units are currently operational in villages located around the plant. The farms collectively produce about 1,000 litres of milk. The milk produced at the farms gets a ready market at the Plant and the employee colony.
