The Hindustan Chamber of Commerce conferred the ‘Champion of Humanity’ award on Rajashree Birla and B Santhanam, as part of its Chamber Day Celebrations. The chamber, that will be reaching a membership of thousand soon, is also looking at inclusive development and conferred the award to recognise the service done by the two awardees.
While Rajashree Birla, the Chairperson of the Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiative and Rural Development, has been engaged in rural and community development, with taking care of around 3,000 villages and 7 million people, the group has been involved in several CSR initiatives like free medical treatment and education for the underprivileged. Rajashree Birla is a recipient of numerous awards for her social causes. B Santhanam is the president and managing director, Flat Glass-Saint Gobain Glass Asia, and an alumnus of IIT-Madras, and a leader in industry and commerce skills.
The awardees were presented the honour by M K Narayanan, former Governor of West Bengal and former National Security Advisor, in the presence of N R Dave, president of Hindustan Chamber of Commerce.
“Businesses today are moving from just profit generation to community consciousness. Many companies are trying to find a balance between inclusive development, which is the need of the day,” said B Santhanam. Skill development, women empowerment and education too, he said, need to be addressed by industries.
