Rohit Pathak, CEO and President, writes about Aditya Birla Insulators, which won the Capexil – Special Export Award 2013-14

Aditya Birla Insulators (ABI), a unit of Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd, is India’s largest and the world’s fourth largest manufacturer of electrical porcelain insulators. For close to five decades, ABI has provided world class insulating solutions to the power industry, setting industry standards in technology and quality. It is one of the most trusted names globally with a comprehensive range of high performance insulators.

ABI commenced operations in 1967 with an annual capacity of 2,000 MT. Currently, it has two porcelain production facilities – one at Rishra near Kolkata and another at Halol near Vadodara with a combined loading capacity of 62,400 MT. Both these plants are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, and the testing facilities are NABL accredited.

In 2009, in line with the emerging requirement from customers for transmission networks in areas with high pollution levels, ABI set up a third facility for composite insulators at Halol. While the life of these are typically one-third of the porcelain counterparts, they provide better performance in polluted areas due to the inherent hyd;rophobic properties of its raw materials.

These three units cater to the entire spectrum of insulator needs for the power sector across transmission and substation up to 1200 KV. The products are running successfully in more than 58 countries. Over 20% of the company’s revenue comes from overseas business, and it serves most of the major global OEMs.

Beyond business, ABI is equally committed to the social and economic development of the communities in which it operates so as to build a better, sustainable way of life for the weaker sections of society.

Aditya Birla Insulators is strongly positioned to consolidate its ascendancy as a global player in the insulator industry and in this, it fits firmly group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla’s vision of being a global leader – positioned number one, two or three in all the sectors in which the company operates.
