Bihar
Caustic & Chemicals Limited (BCCL) was incorporated
as a joint venture between the Aditya Birla Group
and the Bihar State Industrial Development Corporation.
The unit was set up with the objective of catering
to the caustic soda requirements of Hindalco,
and to contribute towards the economic development
of the backward region of Palamau district in
Jharkhand. Commissioned in 1984 with an initial
caustic soda capacity of 100 tpd, BCCL has since
grown to become the leading caustic soda producer
in the northern and eastern region of the country.
It has set benchmark as the lowest mercury consuming
caustic soda plant in India with its cell efficiency
comparable to the best in world.
The
company commissioned a 30 mw captive power plant
in the year 2000 and subsequently plant capacity
was enhanced to 150 tpd. In the year 2006, its
capacity was increased to 265 tpd by converting
the Mercury Cell Technology to the more environment
friendly Membrane Cell technology supplied by
UHDENORA.
Further,
the company has commissioned a new 12000 tpa aluminium
chloride plant. Having recorded voluminous growth
in capacity and self sufficiency in power, BCCL
meets 80 per cent of Hindalcos caustic soda
requirements.
Present
capacities of the plant are:
