Aditya Birla Group’s Two-pronged Strategy for Biodiversity Management

  • 01 To prevent harm or degradation of critical habitats and ecologically sensitive areas
  • 02 To achieve 'No Net Loss' (NNL) of biodiversity through effective mitigation where impacts are unavoidable
Aditya Birla Group has adopted the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework which is being driven through a Group-level initiative.

Enhancing Biodiversity by Harvesting Rainwater

Aditya Aluminium - the aluminium smelter operated by Hindalco Industries in Jharsuguda, Odisha, is equipped with a captive power plant whose water requirements are primarily met from the Mahanadi River. Due to the water-intensive nature of aluminium smelting, the unit undertook proactive measures to reduce its freshwater dependency by constructing a rainwater harvesting (RWH) structure within its township area, aimed at supplementing water use for both industrial processes and domestic purposes.

This proactive initiative of Aditya Aluminium not only resulted in substantial volumes of harvested rainwater, but also helped to restore the surrounding natural habitat and enrich its biodiversity.
