HERricane Episode: Mira Kumar

In this episode of HERricane, step into Mira’s world, where precision meets strategy. As a Chartered Accountant, she navigates complex financial landscapes, ensuring stability and growth with every decision.

She doesn’t just balance the books – she engineers financial success.

00:00 – Introduction

Mira Kumar: I am Mira Kumar, and I transform numbers into impact.

00:16 – Family challenges and career focus

Right when I had moved here, it so happened that my parents fell sick—one after the other—for the first couple of years. It was very hard for me to manage the guilt of leaving them behind alone.

I’m the second child, and I had left them to take care of themselves while I was here in Mumbai. I recalculated that decision again and again: Do I need to go back? Do I need to be with them? Do I need to take care of them?

But they never expected that from me. They pushed me to focus on my career. They asked me not to take on their life problems as my own, but instead to focus on building my life.

That was very hard for me in the initial first one or two years when I moved to Mumbai. It was a real challenge.

01:05 – Early opportunities and leadership exposure

After my first year, I immediately got into the Chairman’s Office. And to be 23–24 years old, interacting regularly with the Chairman of the Group, was so humbling, to say the least.

You suddenly realize how much more you have to learn, how much more you have to understand about what’s happening around you. Until then, I was working on details—putting together Excel sheets, making PPTs.

But then the question became: What are we really trying to achieve? What is the information that helps the Chairman make decisions—decisions that impact so many lives?

01:46 – Diverse projects and continuous learning

The work I’m doing is very interesting. It’s been almost two years now, and I still find it exciting because the projects that come to me are so diverse and varied.

There’s no standard format for any project. And that’s what keeps it motivating—knowing that I’m going to learn something new each time.

The people here also make a difference—the analysts I work with, my managers, the culture. It feels so safe, like I’m just coming to hang out with some of my friends. It doesn’t feel like “work” in the traditional sense.

That’s really what motivates me to come in every day.

02:28 – Breaking norms and defining HERricane

In terms of my work, I just want to be somebody who successfully challenged the norm.

Being a HERricane, to me, means a woman who reshapes landscapes, challenges norms, and leaves a lasting impact.
