In Nature’s Balance Lies Our Future

renewable-energy-concept-double-exposure-of-wind-mill-and-substation.webpOn World Nature Conservation Day, we are reminded that our natural world—its minerals, forests, wetlands, oceans, and biodiversity—is under immense stress. The facts are sobering:

  • Nearly 75% of land and 66% of marine ecosystems have been significantly altered by human activity.
  • The world has lost over 70% of global wildlife populations since 1970.
  • Up to 1 million species face extinction within decades.
  • Wetland degradation alone could cost the global economy $39 trillion by 2050.

Behind these numbers is a clear message: Humanity is using the Earth’s resources faster than they can regenerate. In the face of mounting energy crises and climate instability, conserving nature is no longer just about protection—it’s about survival.

At Aditya Birla Group, we view nature conservation as core to our climate commitment. We have set an ambitious goal: Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. This goes hand in hand with conserving energy, reducing waste, and embracing circular economy practices.

Transition to renewables

Across our businesses, we are taking decisive steps to shift to clean energy:

  • Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail: 26% of energy from renewable energy sources
  • UltraTech Cement: On track for 85% green energy by 2030
  • Hindalco: On track to reach 26% of energy from renewable energy sources by 2026
  • Aditya Birla Chemicals: Emissions will be cut by 30% before 2030

Eliminating waste

Waste can have value and this is what Group businesses are demonstrating every day.

  • Novelis: A world leader in recycling over 84 billion beverage cans every year, reducing landfill and conserving natural resources
  • Hindalco: 3 out of 4 refineries convert 100% bauxite residue into a resource for the cement sector
  • Birla Copper: Tackling e-waste by setting up India's first-of-its-kind copper scrap and e-waste recycling facility
  • Grasim: In FY 2024-25, we collected 12,289 MT of plastic packaging waste, achieving 100% recovery of the plastic packaging we introduced into the Indian market in FY 2023-24. Of this, 4,635 MT was recycled, while 7,654 MT was sent for end-of-life disposal in cement plants.

Water is a precious resource and our businesses have gone to great lengths to achieve a significant reduction in water conservation.

  • UltraTech: Successfully achieved 5.3 times water positivity by FY25
  • Birla Cellulose: Rainwater harvesting for 53% of water requirements, reusing 68% of treated wastewater
  • Grasim: Recycled water is 45% -- over 27 million litres of water recycled
  • Hindalco: Achieved ZLD status at 15 out of 19 sites, on track to achieve ZLD across all sites by FY2030

Our journey doesn’t end here. Conservation is not a one-time action—it’s a mindset. A shift in how we operate, consume, and co-exist with nature.

As we mark this day, let us renew our collective commitment to preserve, protect, and restore. Because protecting nature is not just about saving species or landscapes—it’s about securing a liveable planet for us all.
