He defied his family's wishes, ventured beyond the traditional family trading business and – in a bold move – established the Birla Jute Manufacturing Co. Ltd. in 1919. Not only did he face resistance from his family, but the British government, fearing competition from local industry, threw obstacles in his path. However, his resolve and determination overcame these challenges.

He believed in India's self-reliance and actively strived to foster India's self-reliance and industrial independence. Ventures like Grasim Industries (founded in 1947 to address the cotton shortage post-independence) and Hindalco Industries (established in 1958 to meet the growing demand for aluminium) are testaments to his vision. His efforts played a pivotal role in building the early foundations of India's strong industrial base. Both Grasim and Hindalco are among global leaders in their respective sectors today.
