Odisha rises in the east

In this resource-rich state of east India, Aditya Birla Group has built up a solid presence with operations spanning manufacturing and services.
Even as Odisha pitches growth as one of India's next economic engines, India’s leading business conglomerate Aditya Birla Group is one of the key stakeholders in the state’s economic growth. Home to rich mineral resources and buoyed by significant new investments and initiatives by Indian industry, this eastern state is successfully positioning itself as a manufacturing hub.
Odisha may be home to one of India’s largest tribal populations. However, it is also the site for India’s only unit producing aluminium stock for beverage cans, thus reducing imports. The state is known for its gorgeous Sambalpuri weaves. And yet, Sambalpur is home to metal used by global brands for automotive and aerospace.
As one of the major business houses invested in the state, Aditya Birla Group is very happy to be an enabler in the state’s shift towards progress and development.
Metals Powerhouse
Odisha is the core of Hindalco’s aluminium strategy, with world-class facilities and massive expansion projects. The metals flagship has already invested more than Rs. 25,000 crore across bauxite mining, alumina refining, primary aluminium smelting, and downstream manufacturing. The company’s presence is set to grow with an additional investment of Rs.37,000 crore in greenfield and brownfield projects. Hindalco employs nearly 23,000 people in Odisha, making it one of the state’s largest employers.
Odisha is home base for a number of Hindalco units, including:
- Aditya Aluminium (Sambalpur), a massive integrated complex at Lapanga that includes a smelter and a captive power plant. Here, a Rs. 21,000-crore expansion is underway to double smelting capacity to 7.2 lakh tonnes annually.
- Utkal Alumina (Rayagada) which operates a 2.12 MTPA world-class alumina refinery. It is fed by the Baphlimali bauxite mines, which are connected to the plant via a unique 18 km long-distance conveyor.
- Hirakud Smelter (Hirakud): One of India’s oldest aluminium facilities, it continues to serve as an anchor for upstream production.
- Odisha is where Hindalco has blazed a trail with an integrated round-the-clock renewable power solution, which enables greener aluminium by lowering the carbon intensity of aluminium production.
India’s one-and-only Aluminium Park
Odisha’s Lapanga is the site of Hindalco’s Aluminium Park, which houses the Aditya smelter as well as a scrap recycling unit and downstream aluminium units. A Rs. 800-crore battery foil plant and a Rs. 4,500-crore flat-rolled products (FRP) facility will support Odisha’s rise in the electric vehicle sector. Designed to support up to 100 GWh of lithium-ion cell production, the plant strengthens India’s capability for electric mobility and energy storage, while reducing reliance on imported specialty materials.
In Odisha, Hindalco is strengthening India’s aluminium ecosystem, aligning Make-in-India with future demand from mobility, energy and advanced manufacturing.
Mining movements
Odisha is where Essel Mining & Industries Limited, the mining flagship of Aditya Birla Group, has established a significant presence, supporting the state in leveraging its mineral resources of coal and iron ore.
Besides operating as India’s first private Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) at Bhubaneswari Opencast Project in Angul, Essel Mining operates other large-scale coal mining projects across Odisha. The company also has an iron ore beneficiation and pelletisation plant in Basantpur, through which it drives sustainability and efficiency in processing iron ore to pellets.
Wealth of weaves
Odisha has a rich heritage in textiles is a natural fit for Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail, which set up its first manufacturing unit outside of Bengaluru at Bhubaneswar. With a capacity of 2.5 million garments every year, the unit employs around 1,600 employees to produce brands like Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Allen Solly and Peter England.
Cementing progress
Cuttack is witnessing a surge in cement manufacturing, thanks to UltraTech Cement, the global leader in cement manufacturing (outside of China). The ground-breaking ceremony of UltraTech’s US$ 42.2m expansion project took place in September 2025 at the project site which touches adjoining villages of Khamar Nuagaon and Kolathpangi. The expansion will double the unit’s capacity from 3Mt/yr to 6Mt/yr.
Growth chemistry
Ganjam, which sits near the coast, is known for its Chilika Lake and handicrafts. It is also the location of Aditya Birla Chemical’s plant at Ganjam in Odisha. The plant manufactures chlor alkali and has won recognition for its efforts in energy and water conservation.
Clean energy
Odisha is making waves with its focus on renewable energy. Aditya Birla Renewables, with its pan-India 4.3 GW portfolio, has established a footprint of clean energy in Odisha with solar energy powering manufacturing units for Hindalco and other companies.
Financial services
To support the financial requirements of Odisha’s citizenry, the Group provides comprehensive lending and wealth management services through several Aditya Birla Capital centres. Besides major hubs in Bhubaneswar’s Jharpada and Chandrasekharpur areas, the Group has a strong regional presence with dedicated offices in Cuttack, Balasore, Sambalpur, Puri, Brahmapur, and Jagatsinghpur.
Sustainable development
Beyond business, the Group’s CSR initiatives are spread across 128 villages in Odisha. From initiatives that sustain the state’s traditional bamboo craftsmanship in Sambalpur, to coffee plantation projects on reclaimed mining lands in Rayagada, the Group is supporting livelihoods in the community. Also part of the CSR strategy are engagements for skilling with Industrial Training Institutes (ITI), health centres near project sites, and RO systems for providing clean drinking water.
As Odisha rises in its pursuit of prosperity, Aditya Birla Group is pacing alongside to support where needed. In the Group’s India portfolio, Odisha stands as a shining beacon of progress.
