14 September, 2021

At Grasim, innovation is an enabler of business success and its regular and incremental innovations help the company stay agile and responsive to consumer needs

Innovation is one of the key reasons behind the marketplace success of Grasim Industries. Its focus on R&D has helped the 75-year-old company stay in tune with consumer demands and ahead of the competition. The company drives innovation across its fibre, yarn, chemicals, textiles and other businesses. And it has consistently invested in building infrastructure to support a pipeline of new products along with process transformations.

With eight centres that drive its R&D in next gen products, Grasim has clocked 90 patents/applications to its name. Here are some of the recent path breakers from Grasim.

Liva Reviva: Upcycling waste

This fibre replaces virgin raw material with pre-consumer fabric waste, thus upcycling waste that would otherwise be incinerated or sent to landfills. This innovation solves two unique sustainability challenges: reducing textile waste and improving transparency in the fashion supply chain.

EcoFlush: Biodegradable fibres

These are short length biodegradable fibres for nonwoven wipes and other applications. When used in wipes, the biofriendly fibres enable provide easy dispersal by flushing after use and thus reduce clogging of toilets.

Liva Antimicrobial: Germ protection

Blending safety with fashion, the Liva Antimicrobial innovation gives the wearer longer lasting protection from microbes. Made of nature-based cellulose fibres, Antimicrobial is skin-friendly, odour free, lasts for multiple washes and is designed to kill 99% microbes such as viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Greentrack: Consumer awareness

Based on blockchain technology, the GreenTrack™ platform allows consumers to track the VSF fibre supply chain from certified forests to end user. A QR code adds value to the product by making the origin of the fibre clear and thus adds to the sustainability story behind the product.

Poly Aluminium Chloride: Water treatment

Treatment and purification of municipal and industrial water is a major end-use application for poly aluminium chloride (PAC). Grasim has been granted a patent for developing a method of preparing stable Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) liquid and improving the stability of PAC powder.

Twin Tube Technology: Productivity increase

Grasim has indigenously developed the twin tube technology for coarse deniers on Pot Spun Yarn Technology as a technique that improves productivity.

Recycling Cotton: Waste reduction

Grasim’s Viscose Filament Yarn is increasing its sustainability footprint by using pulp manufactured with recycled cotton garment waste as an input raw material. As much as 5% of the input is upcycled waste which would otherwise go to landfill or be incinerated.
