Two Women, One Mission: Bringing Healthcare to Those Who Need It Most

In the bustling city of Bengaluru, where access to healthcare for the less privileged is often a daily struggle, a mother and daughter chose to become a force for good that provided quality and accessible treatment.
For over 15 years, Priya’s mother Rani Desai, a public health consultant, witnessed a stark and painful truth: families in underserved communities going without even the most basic medical care. Illnesses that could be treated were left to worsen, simply because help was out of reach. Instead of waiting for change, she decided to create it.
Drawing on their personal savings and an unshakeable sense of purpose, the mother-daughter duo founded the Anahat Foundation. What began as a small effort soon grew into a lifeline for thousands. Through free health camps, they brought consultations, medicines, and diagnostic tests directly to those who needed them most—no cost, no barriers, no questions asked.
For the communities they served, this was more than healthcare. It was dignity, reassurance, and hope. “I have been coming here for four to five years,” shares one beneficiary. “Blood tests are free, medicines are free, doctor consultations are free—and everything is well managed. They provide good medicines.”
Over the past seven years alone, the foundation has treated more than 15,000 people, caring for 50 to 100 patients every single day. But what truly defines their journey is not just the scale—it is their unwavering commitment. Even when funds ran low, they never stopped. Priya stepped in to strengthen the foundation’s reach—mobilising resources, building awareness, and ensuring the work could continue.
Rani remained on the frontlines, treating patients with compassion and dedication until her very last breath. Together, they proved that change does not always begin with institutions. Sometimes, it begins with two people who refuse to give up.
Today, though her mother is no longer by her side, Priya continues to carry their shared dream forward. The mission remains clear: to ensure that no one is denied access to affordable, quality primary and preventive healthcare.
Priya is well aware that to sustain and grow this impact, more hands are needed. “We need support from young people,” she says. “Whether it’s volunteering your time or donating even a small amount.”
