World Cancer Day: Time to renew the fight against cancer

Cancer, the leading cause of death worldwide, accounted for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. India too has witnessed an upward trend with about 1.39 million cases reported in the same year.
As a responsible corporate with commitment to communities embedded deeply in its DNA, the Aditya Birla Group is committed in its fight against cancer. Implemented as part of ABG’s corporate social responsibility, the Group has adopted a multi-pronged approach ranging from extending financial support for cancer patients to creating awareness and dispelling misconceptions about the disease.
ABG against cancer
The Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, a multi-specialty tertiary hospital located at Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune, has played a critical role in the Group’s fight against cancer.
Around 15,500 mammograms, 50,000 cancer screenings, 18,000 chemotherapies and 1,200 onco-surgeries were undertaken for the underprivileged over the last four years.
Prevention of cancer is also central to the Group’s fight against the disease. As part of the effort, 8933 HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine doses were administered to 7,644 women. High-risk HPVs can cause cancer and the vaccines were administered to stem cervical cancer.
Help and hope for all
The Group’s battle against cancer involves extending financial support to the underprivileged. Over 300 children (from four-month-old infants to 17-year-old teenagers) from financially disadvantaged families were offered financial help for cancer treatment. The medical interventions were carried out in collaboration with the Cancer Patients Aid Association and the Indian Cancer Society.
ABG’s cancer initiatives extend to building cancer literacy and public awareness through communication and campaigns.
World Cancer Day serves as an opportunity for the world community to reinspire and renew efforts to fight the disease.
