The Constable Who Turned His Struggles into a Classroom of Hope

For Amit Kumar Lathia, a constable with the Delhi Police, service is rooted in lived experience. His purpose was shaped long before he wore the uniform. Born into poverty, Amit’s life took a sudden turn when his father, a farmer, suffered a cardiac arrest. With no money for education or coaching, Amit sold tea to survive, studying through sleepless nights to chase a single goal: a government job. His hard work paid off in 2010, when he joined the Delhi Police as a constable.
Two years later, Amit found himself surrounded by children whose lives looked painfully familiar. Many pulled rickshaws, worked as daily-wage labourers, or came from families that couldn’t afford school, let alone coaching. “When I saw these kids, I saw my own struggles,” he says. That recognition sparked a decision that would change hundreds of lives. Amit began taking in underprivileged students, offering them food, shelter, and free coaching, using most of his own salary to fund their future.
The choice came at a personal cost. His family opposed his decision, and Amit was asked to leave his home. Through it all, his wife stood firmly by his side. A government college professor, she managed the household so Amit could focus on teaching, building not just academic skills, but confidence and direction. “I don’t just want to give them education,” Amit says. “I want to give them knowledge that keeps them away from crime and helps them become part of mainstream society.”
Today, Amit helps students prepare for jobs in the army, police, and other government services. Over 180 students have already secured government jobs, and many more are on their way. Inspired by his work, five officers and former students now volunteer their time to teach and mentor others. Every year, Amit adopts 30 children using his salary. He accepts no monetary donations, only books, food, or ration for the children.
“If I can become a constable,” he says, “why can’t these kids secure government jobs too?”
