<p>Meet Kanpur’s Mahboob Malik. The man who himself had to quit school after Class X because of poverty, is today running two full-fledged schools where over 1500 students from underserved communities are getting free education – and a shot at a better life.</p><p>Every morning at his tea stall, Mahboob would notice a stark contrast - while some children walked by in school uniforms, others spent their days doing hard labour or picking garbage just to survive. Unable to ignore this divide, he took a bold decision: to use the money he earned from selling tea to educate underprivileged children. Mahboob, who did not get the opportunity to pursue higher education, made a promise to himself: I could not study, but I would make sure others could.</p><p>Over time, his small stall became a source of big change, helping hundreds of kids build a brighter future. “<i>In 2014, I turned my tea stall into a makeshift classroom. I would visit slums, talk to kids collecting waste, and tell them that books could change their life,</i>” says the self-made Mahboob.</p><p>In 2016, he rented a small room, got uniforms, notebooks and bags for a few children, and with two teachers began teaching full-time. It wasn't easy. Parents resisted, money ran low, but Mahboob never gave up. Soon, support from people started pouring in.</p><p>The Maa Tujhe Salaam Social Foundation was founded in 2017. Today, the foundation runs two schools with 12 teachers and over 1,500 students. Kids who once had no future, are now learning, living and dreaming. Mahboob still donates 80% of his income to fund their education. He doesn't have a degree, but he is giving hundreds of children an opportunity to get one. <p>When Mumbai-based techie Akshay Ridlan was preparing for UPSC exams, he read about a 17-year-old autistic boy Tarun Gupta who went missing in 2019, never to be found again. The differently-abled teenager had boarded a wrong train.</p><p>This was the inspiration behind Project Chetna, an initiative of Akshay’s Ridlan AI Foundation, that offers QR-coded pendants with identification, medical and contact details embedded in them. These pendants enable easy identification that serves as a lifeline for vulnerable people like elders with dementia or children with disabilities who may encounter problems while moving around in public spaces.</p><p>Akshay discovered that most missing cases involved people with dementia, disabilities, or children with autism. He spoke to doctors, caregivers, and visited old age homes to understand what families really needed. That's when project Chetna was born.</p><p>“<i>At Ridlan AI Foundation, we are dedicated to harnessing the transformative power of AI for social good,</i>” says Akshay, adding that Project Chetna empowers not just the affected individuals but also their families and caregivers. “<i>By promoting the adoption of QR pendants, we aim to instil confidence and ensure the well-being of our elderly and specially abled children</i>,” says the 26-year-old Akshay.</p><p>These QR tags act as crucial information points, offering immediate access to essential medical information and emergency contacts. With just a quick scan, they can guide individuals back to comfort and security of their family, giving them the confidence to venture into public spaces on their own.</p><p>Project Chetna has already distributed over 15,000 pendants for free, and even built a system that instantly alerts families when the code is scanned. For Akshay, this is just the beginning. “<i>We want more people to step forward and be part of this initiative.
